Mary Massengill Reading assignment 2 In “Eating Christmas in the Kalahari” there are several core concepts demonstrated in this article. Among some of these concepts are social cohesion, mechanical solidarity, ethnocentrism, and social capital. Richard Borshay Lee humbly relays the culture shock he experienced when trying to increase his social capital. He studies the people as an anthropologist but in the end learns some valuable sociological lessons. Lee describes his experience in the Kalahari with the !Kung Bushmen. While he was studying this group of people, he formed an inequality during his time studying the people as a result of his research. It was his intent “to study the hunting and fathering subsistence economy of the !Kung” (Lee, 1969, p. 31). He created this social inequality between himself and the !Kung Bushmen because he was determined “not to provide them with food, share my own food, or interfere in any way with their food-gathering activities” (Lee, 1969, p.31).
