5.02 Food Progression for Infants Breastmilk is the perfect food for infants for the first few months of its life. Usually up until the age of 4 months an infant gets all it needs from its mother’s milk. After about four months the infant will start transitioning into solid food. This is done first by intro- ducing fortified dry infant cereal. Rice is usually an easy way to start. You use breast- milk or formula with the dry cereal. At first make it running, but as the baby gets used to it, you can thicken it up. After about a week of cereal, you can introduce a mild flavored vegetable.
