Barriers to Communication Introduction This unit has examined points on culture, worldview, and language, and how these have an effect on communications. This node will look at some other barriers to communications, including customs, views on gender roles, taboos, and stereotypes. Each of these can lead to barriers and misunderstandings in intercultural and international business communications. Learning Materials If culture is the lens through which people see the world, what kinds of barriers to communications does it generate aside from language? Additional barriers that may have to be addressed in international business include the following: Customs Gender roles Taboos Stereotypes Customs Customs are acts and actions that develop over time. Many involve unwritten guidelines as to what is proper behavior. One example is the way a person in the United States and a person in Japan treat being given a business card. In the United States, a business card is generally seen as a simple way to provide information about a person’s title and contact information. In Japan, the business card is seen as an extension of the person. Cards are exchanged as part of a formal
