"Telling me"

She says; When I drop you of I’m going home. “Aww yeah, how come?” Cause you’re drunk already and you’ll be in bed by 6:30. I look at the clock, that sits on top of a record player, with a spinning black disk playing Strauss. It’s 5:45. Fuck yeah, I think. Only 45 minutes to go.

“Hitting the glass” I hit the glass run my hands across it. “I love you like that woman completely” Completely drunk. “All that space, babe. The hardness. You and me. That’s you and me completely.” I wind the window down, I need some air. All the fullness of this car is fucking with my bio rhythm.

“Stories” A lot of people write cool poems about snorting blow and fucking dead hookers or munching on rugs; Poems about the big wide world. Yeah I’ve seen all that, even ate some grade “A” snatch. But I like my poems about this room. With the couch and the holder for my beer. The short walk to the toilet and back with un-washed hands. Burning, sleepy, eyes. Or the cat. Or my woman under a brown felt blanket. World movies on Foxtel. Bukowski only wanted a tiny atom bomb. Not me. I want a huge one. Big enough to shake up the world, and only the people inside houses can hang on, or get stuck in the ceiling fan. A bomb to put us all in the stars. In the eyes of the poets who write great things about love and God and death. A big bomb to wake me up and at the same time put me to sleep. Underneath the felt blanket she says, “That sounds more like a poem, Dude. You gotta mention the Stars, if you ever want to make it as a poet.” She is right. She is always right.

“That’s mine” I steal her bottle of cough syrup and take a few good natured slugs. It’s Chinese herb shit. She says, “Ben, Dude, you’re not even sick” And I reply, between gulps, “Bullshit woman, I have a cough that won’t quit.” “that’s anxiety” She picks up her noodle cup and walks to the other room to watch television by herself. I pass out, drunk, and when I wake up she has hidden the bottle under a pillow and is eating light and tangy chips with a suspicious smile. A smile that says, “You silly creep. You can’t have my cough syrup. That’s mine.”

“On the sheet” She pulls back the doona cover and see’s more scribbles on the new bed sheets. And then she gets mad. And yells. And slams the door. And comes back with a cup of cofee. In a flurry she throws the blanket to the floor. The scribble reads – “the prettiest woman in town” With a little arrow pointing to her feet. It’s nice and lamenting. But I make it look phoney, like a bitch, by writing this poem about how fucking brilliant I thought it was.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
