CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY Critical Analysis Essay “Me Talk Pretty One Day” Ruby Corpuz-Jones Southern New Hampshire University
CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY In the article "Me Talk Pretty One Day", David Sedaris talks about his previous experience about returning to school at a late age. In addition, Sedaris decided to relocate to Paris, France to learn how to speak French. Sedaris describes his discomfort and anxiousness of learning French while dealing with a difficult teacher. He does this by describing his anxiety of being older but coping with it and sharing his experiences of the struggles with the new culture and his arrogant teacher. By the end of the article, he was able to realize that he does in fact understand French however is still not able to speak fluently. The many humorous insights about the journey he underwent provided his readers, like myself, the comfort of knowing that it is never too late to do anything that you want to do. Within the article "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris, it discusses the many challenges of learning something new, especially when placed in a negative situation. However, by allowing his audience to feel his insecurities, overcoming his fear through hard work and feeling accomplished because of his tenacity, one can achieve success. Originally, I stated that the author's purpose of this article is to inform its viewers that even though you have some exposure and/or learned of a different language, it is quite difficult to become fluent. However, with time, one can learn anything that they are passionate about. After re-reading the article with an analytical analysis, the author's goal has not changed. Within the first words from the article, Sedaris spoke about his experience about going back to school "at the age of forty-one" (Sedaris, 1999). With his teacher's constant abuse and belittling, Sedaris (1999) wrote "over time, it became impossible to believe that any of us would ever improve." However, the end of the article shows his progress because of his tenacity and eagerness to learn.
