2Personality PerspectivesBehaviorists believed that personality is shaped by environmental influences, such asrewards and punishments, not by unconscious influences or by underlying traits.Behavioristsbelieve that a person’s behavior is learned. Many behaviorists today adopt a broader view oflearning than the traditional behaviorists. This model is called social- cognitive theory. Humanisticpsychologists believe that conscious choice and personal freedom are central features of what itmeans to be human.Social-Cognitive PerspectivesSocial-Cognitive theory is a learning based model of personality that emphasizes bothcognitive factors and environmental influences in determining behavior. Social cognitive theoryexplains how different factors can influence an individual’s development. Social Cognitive theoryproves that operant conditioning is not the only method of leaning.Social cognitive theorist believe that personality comprises not only learned behavior, butalso the way individuals think about themselves and the world around them. There are threecontributors to social cognitive theory, Julian Rotter, Albert Bandura, and Walter Mischel. Socialcognitive theorist Julian Rotter believed that explaining and predicting behavior involves knowingand individual’s reinforcement history as well as the person’s expectancies and subjective values,and that people acquire general expectancies about their ability to obtain reinforcements. AlbertBandura sees people as active agents in directing their lives(Bandura,2006,2008b,2010).
