Edward Ellis IV Ms. Wilhelmus AP English Literature November 6, 2017 The Great Gatsby Analysis Like a Professor The Great Gatsby is a story with a plotline that is heavily immersed in symbolic meaning. Most of the symbols and acts can be overlooked when the reader (or watcher) doesn’t make an effort to notice them. However, through the reading of How to Read Literature like a Professor, I have been given insight as to how to decipher a text or show to uncover their hidden meanings. In the case of The Great Gatsby, the author focused heavily on the use of clothing and color to represent characteristics, intentions, or actions of the people involved. Furthermore, the idea behind the unity of characters in communion is used frequently throughout the book and movie in order to better dramatize the relationship of the characters. Additionally, the topic of sexual relations was often introduced indirectly through subtle actions of the characters and the particular setting they were in. Lastly, weather was a crucial tool in the foreshadowing of events
