HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY 2 Using Health Information Technology as a Source of Evidence-Based Practice One major issue in nursing practice is the use of safe staffing levels. The number of staff on any shift must be enough to cover all the most likely scenarios and to ensure that all patients have the right level of care and attention. In a study of nine European countries, Aiken et al. (2014) found that an increase in a nurses’ workload by just one patient increased the likelihood of any inpatient dying within 30 days by 7%. Harrington et al. (2012) found similar effects in nursing homes, with an increase in patient workload having a significant effect on mortality. Recio-Saucedo et al. (2015) found that insufficient nursing staff levels led to an increase in the number of patients leaving the emergency room without being seen, meaning that their problems could increase in severity at home.
