BSIM 3017 Database Systems Page 2 Course Coordinator: Alvin KWAN Office: RM 121 (until October, 2017) RM 111C (from November, 2017) Email: [email protected] Tel: 2241 5324 Course Code: BSIM3017 Course Title: Database Systems Credit weighting: 6 credit units Course Description This course aims to introduce fundamental concepts of database management systems, with an emphasis on the relational database model and applications in information agencies. Topics include the motivation for database systems, data modeling, principles of database design, data definition and manipulation languages. Support for procedural database objects in SQL is also introduced. Course Aims This course aims to empower students to: 1. realize the importance of databases in modern computer applications; 2. master basic relational database concepts; 3. perform data analysis and design for simple computer applications; 4. develop simple SQL queries for relational databases; 5. understand the SQL features for supporting procedural database objects; and 6. appreciate the trend of development of databases Pre-requisites and Co-requisites and/or Prohibited Combination There are no pre-requisites and co-requisites for this course though some prior knowledge in basic computer concepts would be useful.
