Samuel Su Su1 Caryl Flinn 26 January 2017 Gentle Giants Bruce Weber’s film Gentle Giants, engages both Richard Dyer’s theory of utopia and Roland Barthes myth, through the films narration, scrapbook, and dogs. Weber’s film can be used as an example for their theories, therefore engaging with their theories. For example, the scrapbook in the film can be used as an example for Dyer’s utopia. While the embracement of sexuality, can be argued as Barthes myth. In Dyer’s theory of utopia, one of the reasons why we choose to consume and create media is to escape from social tensions generated by reality. Film offers a different reality that solves social tension and fulfills our desire not met by reality. In Gentle Giant , the scrapbook that Weber created during his youth, is filled with well- cut actors from the 1950’s, which was his utopia. This was his utopia because he was dealing with homosexuality during his youth, and the scrapbook offered an escape from reality that satisfied his desires.
