WEEK 12: The Life and Philosophy of Plato (11/14) Background and Life 1. 429-347: grows up seeing constitution fail especially when Socrates is put to death because of a biased Athenian state 2. Wealthy on both sides of the Family -- family gets divided after Peloponnesian war though. Stepdad is democrats, but uncles are 3. Plato is the opposite of Socrates in many respects devotes life to philosophy because he doesn’t trust politics…. .rejects wife and children unlike Socrates who has them. Plato founds a philosophical school, Socrates doesn’t. plato writes a lot and has lots of books today, Socrates never wrote anything. Works and Philosophy Dialogues invents this new genre – 1) allows him to present his ideas through others which don’t come back to bite him 2) forces reader to make up mind, question/answer style 3) epistemological issue 4) image of Socrates, presented as a midwife that draws ideas out but never produces own Interpretation Reader must choose one of the sides or they can refute both
