October 31, 2017 Motor Neurons and Muscles Skeletal muscles have different mixtures of fiber types Soleus Muscle : for posture, endurance; one fiber type dominates (slow/red) Gastrocnemius muscle : mixed uses, mixed fiber types There’s a compromise: mixed mucle fiber types stationed for ATPase (enzy important for oxidative metabolism) - You can train to get better, but you cannot be world class w/o help from genetics and being born predisposed to different types of muscle fibers. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain; both are part of the CNS - Motor Neurons : in ventral horns of spinal cord o Cell bodies projection out - Mixed nerve: sensory and motor axons - Ventral Horn: motor neurons - Dorsal horn: sensory neurons. Later ventral horn controls things like hands. Medial = shoulder, bucep Motor unit one alpha motor neuron + all the muscle fibers it innervates - Smallest unit of muscle that can be controlled by the CNS. - Recruit more fibers or increase frequency of fibers The size of motor unit matched to its function - Sizes of motor units vary fro ma few muscle fiber. UP TO 2000 MUSCLE FUBERS)

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
