BIOL 1306 Chapter 8 Learning Objectives handout 10/25/17 Please help one another with the concept of free energy. Please see the objectives below for what you need to understand about Free-Energy change ( ∆G) . 1. What is a metabolic pathway? 2. Explain the difference between catabolic and anabolic pathways. Give an example of each type. 3. Distinguish between potential energy, kinetic energy, and give examples of each. 4. What is the first law of thermodynamics? 5. What happens during every energy transfer or transformation? 6. Explain what entropy is. 7. What does the second law of thermodynamics predict about changes in disorder (randomness)? 8. Explain what the term spontaneous process means. 9. Explain the terms free energy (Gibbs free energy or G), and ∆G (or δG). 10. Use one of the examples in Fig. 8.5 and explain how a system with more free energy is less stable. 11. Use an example in Fig. 8.5 and explain how a system with higher entropy can do less work.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
