Period 4 26 October 2017 10-26 Journal Entries: Edgar Allan Poe’s Complete Tales & Poems Personal Reaction Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poems and tall tales that this book consists of in order to entertain his audience with frightening, emotional, and mysterious short stories. The first 140 pages of this book contains ten short stories. “The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall” is about a man, Hans Pfaall, who is trying to receive pardons for his multiple murders by collecting information from the moon, in a balloon that converts the vacuum of space into usable air. This story is a hoax, the man deceived the court into thinking he could travel to the moon in a balloon, and later when the man was already pardoned by providing fake information, the court lost communication with the supposed inhabitant of the moon Pfaall provided. This tale is amusing because of how inaccurate the events that take place are, but the theme of the court doing something as severe as pardoning a murderer to advance knowledge about the moon is seen in society today where people trade large amounts of money for small collectables with little to no actual value. The quote, “Horrors of a nature most stern and most appalling would too frequently obtrude themselves upon my mind, and shake the innermost depths of my soul with the bare supposition of their possibility” really targets the readers emotions and allows them to feel exactly how Poe’s character’s emotions are displayed. “The Balloon-Hoax” is another story about hot air balloons, in which a man travels across the Atlantic Ocean in one. This story was published in a newspaper that Poe wrote for called, The Sun . Poe provided many details about
Perna 2 the hot air balloon even visuals and descriptive journals of the man’s fictitious journey. The way that Poe builds up the plot and suspense to make the reader feel like the story is factual is unlike any other writer. “Mesmeric Revelation” is about a sick wealthy patient who wants to document his findings and knowledge for the greater good before he dies by going to a Mesmer, who leads the patient to realize he was intended to die during the consultation. This literature piece really gives the reader an eerie feeling because the patient only went to the Mesmer for help and ended up finding out how, when, and where he will die. This shows the reader how impactful people’s words can be on someone’s life, metaphorically. "Ms. Found in a bottle" is about the narrator of the story, who embarks on a cargo ship when a hurricane hits the ship. Everyone is washed aboard except for the narrator and a sailor. They are able to keep the ship afloat, but are unable to
