Reading Response #2 “The Drifting Snow” 1. The author of the short story “The Drifting Snow” is August Derleth. Derleth was born on February 24th, 1909 and died on July 4 th , 1971. He grew up in Sauk City, Wisconsin and was always very interested in horror stories. He graduated from The University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1930 where he earned a bachelor’s degree. After college he edited and wrote countless stories which helped him become the amazing horror writer he was. “The drifting Snow” was actually published nine years after he graduated college in the year of 1939. 2. The story of “The Drifting Snow” takes place in rural Wisconsin. In the story they refer to where they are as the “Wisconsin Woods.” 3. The very first vampire in the “Wisconsin Woods” was a servant who was a sweet girl who got kicked out by the owner of the house. After she got released, a big snowstorm hit and people went to look for her the next morning, but found her dead on the slope of a hill. Years later the girl returns back to the house and she is suddenly a vampire.
