The play Our Town is a work of sentimental fiction because in the play it broadcasts sentimental aspects. In Act One when it says "Joe would become the brightest boy..." but then says "Joe would be killed in France during World War One." This shows sentimental fiction because the future he was promised was cut short by the war. He had a bright future ahead of him and was going to make it big but the war made that impossible for him to become. In Act One, Mrs.Gibbs"decided to sell the highboy, she hoped to live out her dream of traveling to Paris..." but Dr.Gibbs said, "the trip to Paris would be a bad idea." In this moment he is crushing Mrs.Gibbs dream and makes her upset and feel "disheartened" which can come back to life because although you might want to do something you can get shut down by someone else.
