Lord of the Flies- Chapter 1 Ralph- Quote Jack-Quote Piggy-Quote “Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. ‘A stone.’ ‘No. A shell.’” (15) “You're no good on a job like this.” “All the same –” “We don’t want you,” said Jack, flatly. “Three’s enough.” (24) “Piggy moved among the crowd, asking names and frowning to remember them. The children gave him the same simple obedience that they had given to the man with the megaphones.” (18) Explanation Explanation Explanation This quote expresses that Ralph is observant and knowledgeable. Ralph is the one who makes the initial discovery. This is important, as the conch later enables to become chief. He could tell from a distance exactly what the shell was, and how it would be useful to them. He was able to bring in knowledge to identify that it was in fact a conch shell, and that they could use it to summon the others.
