Anne-Wayland Plowman Dr. Choucair British Literature 1 August 2017 Katherine Mansfield: Miss Brill In five short pages Mansfield smartly, subtly gets several major messages across to her reader. Through a routine oriented, slightly strange, school teacher Mansfield plays with ideas of sanity and even pokes at feminism. Miss Brill is depicted as a single woman who dresses in a luxury fur to visit the park, which is not typical of other people. Throughout the short story, Miss Brill gets lost in her own world speaking to her fur and claiming she’s an actress at the park. While it’s never explicitly stated, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of reason to argue that Mansfield references individuals who suffer mild mental illnesses. The reactions of people who come across Miss Brill suggest that she’s odd, which is emphasized by the amount of time she spends alone in her own fantasy world in her mind.
