Six academic resources, three of which were peer-reviewed, were used toresearch this topic. Two of the publications discussed the positive and negative consequencesconsumerism has on adolescent culture. Additionally, one of the articles suggested that onlineadvertising helps to create a better-informed consumer base. This essay will begin discussing thegeneral main ideas of clothing consumerism on all adolescents. Then it will get into specificdetails and discuss the topics of advertisement and the effect of clothing consumerism on men.The concluding section of this research paper will summarize the overall effect of what clothingconsumerism has on adolescents. The purpose of this essay is to research the popular topic ofconsumerism. CLOTHING CONSUMERISM ON ADOLESCENTS3The Effect of Clothing Consumerism on AdolescentsDesigner clothing is becoming a favored interest in what people consume in fashionculture. There are people of all ages and of both genders going out to pay for more name brandclothing. Some people buy designer clothing to show off their social status, and others buy it tosimply please themselves. An individual will also purchase designer clothing to fit in withsociety’s up-to-date trends. People tend to think women are the ones going shopping andspending more money on designer clothes. However, that may be true; men are also going outmore to shop and buy name brand clothing. Designer companies have been increasing their salesdue to people spending money on their clothing. Companies are stepping up their game andpromoting their products by selling advertisements to people. Whether it’s advertising throughthe television, magazine, websites, many people are noticing designer companies marketing theirproducts and are going out to buy these designer clothes. Designer companies produce productsfor both men and women, and men have taken an interest in name brand clothing. Some menwear name brand clothing in their workplace or to casually go out. Other men buy name brandclothing to display their social status and wealth. Whatever the case is, men are growing a likingto designer clothing and are spending their money on name brand clothes. The increase indesigner clothing sales are largely a result of aggressive advertising, males becoming new targetmarket and branded clothing becoming a representation of social status.
