In the film,  The Graduate,  director Mike Nichols conveys a non-traditional coming of  age story through the life of Ben Braddock, played by Dustin Hoffman. In returning to the fast  paced, glamorous Californian lifestyle that he has been brought up in, Ben confides in his  alienation from social pressures to have a plan for his future. However, his life takes a sharp turn  when he isn’t alone, leading him to regretted decisions down the line. The theme of the film is a  mixture of self-identity, alienation, and coming of age, which the director portrays through the  rebellious outbursts and non-oblivious cues to Braddock’s awkwardness. The reoccurring motif of the fish tank’s in the film further portray the director’s  development of Ben’s isolation from others. The limited, simplistic lifestyle of fish living in a  fish tank shelter’s them from predators and other danger’s in life. The fish are symbolic of Ben’s
