I always thought of ASL as a visual form of English, but in reality, it’s not like English at all. According to our workbook, “ASL and English use different modalities (visual/ gesture/ as opposed to aural/ oral), and have different phonology and grammar” (Smith, Lentz, & Mikos, 2008). It is interesting to think of ASL as a language capable of expressing abstract ideas as well as a language utilizing space and movement to convey meaning. I also finally know why facial expressions, head movement, and eye gaze are so important; it has nothing to do with emotion like I originally thought, but
