Introduction Islamic principles require followers to eat and drink halal food only and avoid haram or ‘doubtful’ food. To put it simply, halal means permissible while haram means prohibited. Halal is not a matter to be trivialized or compromised. In the supply chain world, to maintain chain integrity, we have the right to say ‘No, I cannot carry that’.

Halal Logistics There are arguments that we should not “politicize” halal logistics nor should we treat halal as a business. But the world’s halal food industry has grown by USD35 billion in just three years (2009 to 2012). Excluding halal logistics from a business equation is not a smart decision. So, what is halal logistics? To most non-Muslims, halal means ‘no pork’. To Muslims, halal means ‘permissible’ and a way of life.

Halal Logistics (cont.) According to Tiemen & Ayub , halal logistics can be defined as an act driven by the halal industry to ensure halal integrity from the source, to end users and also for export markets. In this chapter, halal logistics is defined as the ‘permissible method of moving cargo from one place to another while upholding full integrity of the Muslim way of life by eliminating all haram , gharar (unclear) and syak (suspicious) elements’.
