GCU College of Education LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE 03/2014 Teacher Candidate: Grade Level: Date: Unit/Subject: Instructional Plan Title Katherine Lewis First Grade September 13, 2017 Mathematics Understanding Shapes and How to Measure I. PLANNING Lesson summary and focus : For First Graders to begin to understand the tool of measurement and to become familiar with different shapes around them. To also practice measuring objects with different forms of measurement (inches, centimeter, using a ruler etc.) and practice constructing and deconstructing shapes using manipulatives. Classroom and student factors : There are 3 English Language Learners in this second grade class. There are 5 children who have a Tier level 2 for Reading, 2 children with a Tier level 2 for Math, 3 children who have a Tier level 3 for Math. One child is a Tier level 3 for Math and Reading this child is learning disabled. There are two children who are ahead of grade level. There is one child with hearing aids, one who is diabetic. Two important factors are: over half of the class are not at grade level for Reading, and over half of the class are in a ‘LOW’ Socio-economic status. Factors for this could be: limited resources because of limited funds at home and limited guidance academically, from their guardians, because of limited funds at home. Shapes can be described by defining attributes and created by composing and decomposing 2. Measurement is used to compare and order objects and events Specific learning target(s) / objectives: Students will be able to: Learn different forms of measurement used to measure objects such as a ruler, inches, centimeters, meters Have an introduction to measurement and create a solid foundation for understanding the existence of different forms of measurement Become confident and familiar with different shapes, how they are formed, constructed and deconstructed by physically practicing piecing together shapes and deconstructing shapes Teaching notes: This lesson falls within the subject of mathematics and
