Voting in Texas Texans are not avid voters o When compared to other states, Texas is below average in voting turnout (30- year trend) o Texas’ traditional political culture helps to discourage political participation Rules for registering to voter o Must be at least 18 years old (exception: noncitizens, convicted felons, mentally incapacitated) o Must register 30 days before election o Can mail-in registration form, or pick it up at post offices, libraries, or sign up online o Voters are given a voter registration card, which must be shown when voting So Why the Low Turnout? Socioeconomic factors o High-income, well-educated more likely to vote than low-income, less well- educated citizens o Young voters and minorities are less likely to voter o Only 39% of Hispanic Texans over 18 who were registered voted in 2012 o Many hispanics in Texas cannot vote because they are still not citizens o Texas, like most states, prohibits felons from voting o Traditional political culture Party Competition o
