Shannon McIlhenney Nutrition Amanda Gowin November 8, 2017 Impact obesity has on children Cheng, J., East, P., Blanco, E., Kang Sim, E., Castillo, M., Lozoff, B., & Gahagan, S. (2016). Obesity leads to declines in motor skills across childhood. Child: Care, Health And Development , 42(3), 343-350. Doi:10.1111/cch.12336 One thing that is constantly linked with childhood obesity is poor motor skills that is in direct correlation with the excess weight gain. In the article that I read, they did a study to see if motor skills in the children from the ages of 5 and 10 years old were decreased due to excessive weight gain. After the study concluded the results showed that a higher BMI at the age of 5 contributed in the decline in motor proficiency. When they compared the results to the results of the children who are relatively healthy it showed that the overweight children they had significantly worse motor skills. In the end the more children end up gaining weight the more their motor skills start to decline it become harder to reverse. If you prevent childhood obesity at a younger age it can help keep them at par of where they should be in terms of mental alertness. Moore, E. S., Wilkie, W. L., & Desrochers, D. M. (2017). All in the family? Parental Roles in the Epidemic of Childhood Obesity. Journal of Consumer Research, 43(5), 824-859. Dio: 10.1093/jcr/ucw059 Childhood obesity has been a rising epidemic over the last couple of years and starting to become a serious global health crisis. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
