Essay concerning human understanding Blank slate (Tabla rasa) Ideas from sensation+Reflection (Thinking, experience) Premise 1: Ideas come from the mind (thinking) Premises2: These ideas stem from sensation/reflection (EXPERIENCE) o Sensation: senses of external world o Reflection: perception, think, doubt, believe, etc (internal) Premise 2: There are no original ideas They all come from reflection of experiences Premise 3: Children can only think of / understand what they have experienced Only has ideas which have been taught to / observed by him Does not start to develop own ideas until adulthood Premise 4: People experience the same things differently Will never understand something until he examines it Premise 5: Never start to form clear, distinct ideas until you reflect on them
