IAH 207: Concept Maps for Midterm
Zoot Suit
Group:Pedro Casanova, Jazz Cheeks, Riley Wolter, Ethan Emick, Amari Saa
Axes of Distinction:
We think that Zoot Suit operates with multiple races. Minorities are portrayed as the weaker
race and the ones responsible for crime within the film They were accused of being guilty before
they had a fair trial.
Gender and Sexuality
: All the men are put on trial and not the women, because men are seen
as one’s who can commit murder and women can’t.
History
: The trial of Sleepy Lagoon actually happened. Jose Diaz was murdered and Henry and
his friends happened to be at the scene of the crime making them automatically guilty in the
eyes of everyone else.
Religion
: Pachuco can be seen as the devil or angel on your shoulder. A sort of conscious for
Henry that influences his actions. He wears a cross and makes Henry think about whether his
actions are right or wrong.
Law, Justice, and Violence
: The Mexicans are accused for a crime they didn’t commit, because
Mexicans are seen as thugs/savages. Minorities were committed for crimes before trials even
started.
Genre
: Movie hasn’t finished yet.

when the appointed hour comes.” (Ch. 8, p.66)
“There is reason in an Indian, though nature has made him with a red-skin!”

In this quote Hawkeye implies that Indians should not have reason since their
skin is red. This basically states that reason is a uniquely european/civilized trait.
“Should we distrust the man because his manners are not our manners, and that
his skin is dark?”

This quote explains the multiple races axes of distinction and displays it through
a civilized vs. savage lens.

Two types: dark and light
Alice: blonde haired, demur, nervous, and dependent on the men
Cora: dark haired, forceful, opinionated, and more “mature”
History
:
History is changed: In last of the Mohicans, the alliances are swapped, the mohicans are
completely killed off, and some events are greatly embellished.
French and Indian War
Religion
:
Both christianity and native american religion are shown.
Gamut’s Calvinism, a European religion, becomes ridiculous in the wilderness.
Native religion is presented as somewhat mystical throughout the novel.
Law, Justice, and Violence
:
Native American Law (“not a warrior [the Indians] has a scalp and the pale-faces make friends!”
(Ch.17, p.156))
