LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT2Leadership is the process of influencing the behaviors of individuals and groups towardspredetermined goals in an organization. Management is defined as coordinating the workactivities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively. Managementconsist of all the techniques that are used to facilitate productivity but leadership is one of themajor factors, sometime the only factors which determines whether an organization succeeds orfails. Sometimes management and leadership can overlap and you must have both skills to beeffective. Management is more concerned with accomplishment and leadership is a muchbroader concept. Leadership and management both play important roles in the healthcareindustry and are necessary, it is important to identify the specific theories that are applicable inthe healthcare organization so that one can achieve their role as a health care manager.Leadership is one of the major factors, sometimes the only factor that determines whetheran organization succeeds or fails (Publisher, n.d.). Organizational changes demands people tobecome leaders even when that is not their main focus. Leaders don’t have to be appointedwithin an organization, just by demonstrating leadership a person is a leader. When using yourknowledge, personal power, and individual traits to teach a client a skill, to show a family how todo aftercare, to help a client communicate effectively with a physician, or to petition politiciansto promote health and wellness are all examples of leadership traits (Publisher, n.d.). To succeedin leadership roles in today’s healthcare organization you need to be advanced in informationtechnology, focus on quality, globalization, and growth in serviced based organizations. You alsoneed to assume roles that demonstrate problem solving making changes, communication, teamwork, and ambassador (Publisher, n.d.).Management can be defined as coordinating the workactivities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively (Baack &Fischer, 2013). Effective managers help an organization carry out the primary operations by

In the healthcareindustry to manage effectively you must posse a set of key competencies and skills such astechnology skills, human relations, and conceptual skills (Baack & Fischer, 2013). All of theseleadership and management skills should apply not only to managers but to the whole unit orteam and all other organizational levels. There are various theories of leadership that mangershave used for many years. Some of the well-known leadership categories are trait theories,behavioral theories, situational and contingency theories, and recent theories.
