4-1-1 Short Answer: Intent for the Statue of LibertyUpon analyzing article one “How Did the Statue of Liberty Come to Symbolize Immigration” I understand that the intent of the discussion was to recognize a poem written in honor of the statue, "The New Colossus," a sonnet by Emma Lazarus a Jewish American. The poem was intended to inspire persecuted Jews coming from Russia to pursue a new life of libertyin their new home, the United States.. The original sculptor Fredric-Auguste Bartholdi did not intend to inspire the idea of immigration but rather create a symbol of liberty spreading outward from America. My interpretation of the Statue of Liberty is that it is a symbol of freedom, liberty, and the opportunity for anyone oppressed to embark on a new life as an American. My great-grandmother Dagmar was an immigrant from Norway. The stories bequeathed to me have always inspired me to think of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as the hub of immigration and the gateway to become an American. (See Image Below Page 3).
