CRYSTALLIZED AND FLUID INTELLIGENCE 2 Introduction Intelligence can be defined in different ways, and for psychologists, they have offered different theories that attempt to explain the concept of intelligence. In an attempt to explain the concept of intelligence psychologist Raymond proposed two different types of intelligence that are crystallized intelligence and fluid intelligence. Fluid intelligence refers to the ability to solve new problems using a logic that fits with the new situation and identifying the patterns that emerge (Brown, 2016). On the other hand, crystallized intelligence refers to the ability to use acquired knowledge and experience to solve problems (Brown, 2016). Thesis Even with the clear differentiation between the two types of intelligence what psychologists have continued to study is how crystallized and fluid intelligence can be used to solve real-life situations through simulated environments. In one study by Penta, Anghel, Talpos-Niculescu, Argesanu and Stanca (2015) the researchers focused on an analysis on how environmental factors could be used to stimulate crystallized or fluid intelligence that could be used in enhancing task solving efficiency. Major findings The study found that for a task that requires more attention and being under time pressure fluid intelligence is central to solving the task and it improves the results by 21.88% ( Penta et al., 2015). For the simulation of the crystallized intelligence, the study reported that learned knowledge and experiences only contributed to the task solving efficiency by 2.03% which is ten times weaker than the fluid intelligence ( Penta et al., 2015). The researchers concluded that the
CRYSTALLIZED AND FLUID INTELLIGENCE 3 benefits of stimulating the crystallized intelligence were ten times weaker in performance improvement compared to the benefits of stimulating the fluid intelligence. Implications for the field of psychology The findings of the study are important because they will help psychologists in analyzing the influence of environmental factors on both fluid and crystallized intelligence. The study analyzes how stimulated environments can be used to enhance task solving efficiency which improves performance. The correlation between the environment and intelligence is critical for psychologists as they try to analyze how real-life situation such as low performance due to mental fatigue can be corrected hence improving performance.
