1. Urticaria- A skin eruption usually cause by an allergic reaction to foods, infection, or injury; also called hives. 1. My friend Taylor has to be careful not to let the cat touch her when she comes over to my house or else she will have an urticaria wherever it does. 2. Actinic- (radiation) producing a photochemical effect/ change. (Actinic keratosis- a precancerous skin condition caused by exposure to sunlight; the condition is marked by overgrowths of the outer epidermal layer) 1. The dermatologist warned his patient that her constant tanning could put her at higher risk for actinic keratosis. 3. Keratosis- Any skin disease characterized by a hard horny tissue. 1. Because of the hard, horny nature of the bumps on the patient’s skin, the dermatologist was concerned that the patient might have actinic keratoses. 4. Decubitus- Any position assumed by a patient when lying in bed. (Decubitus ulcer- a skin sore caused by pressure of immobility while lying down; also called bedsore.) 1. My grandmother got decubitus ulcers when she was living in the nursing home because the staff would let her lay in bed all day. 5. Ulcer- An eroded lesion of the skin or mucous membrane. 1. My father thinks the reason why he gets ulcers inside his mouth frequently is because he has acid reflux.
