2 The Beatles The Importance of the Beatles Arguably the most famous and influential rock group of the era, it is rare that anyone not know the infamous group that is the Beatles. The band got together in the town of Liverpool, England in 1960. They built their fame working long hours at Hamburg and experimenting with different elements and styles ranging from psychedelic to ballads and every genre in between. They currently hold the record as the best-selling band in history and have estimated sales of over 600 million records worldwide. They hold places on top charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom and are considered music royalty. Though the group broke up several years later in 1970, they all ended up having successful musical careers alone. Comprising of group members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, the group was a force to be reckoned with, and their work paving the way for many artists in the future. Their work created an entirely new foundation for music as people know it today; inventing new sound, changing music distribution, as well as creating the now widely popular music video. However, with the group forming in 1960, music began to take on a new form and had hints of rebellion ranging with both content and sound.(Sheridan , 2010) What the Beatles did that no other group prior had done was create combinations of sound. They would incorporate the complex rhythms of Beethoven with the new and coming pop
