It is generally defined as a" type of racism that causes people of a subordinate group to believe the distorted messages of the dominant group about their racial group". However , in the Imitation of Life with the character Sarah Jane in mind, internalized oppression is " A sense of inferiority, low self esteem, and aggression due to social systems of prejudice, discrimination, and oppression" In the film , we are introduced the character of Sarah Jane, a young , light skinned girl with an African- American mother. As the movie progresses, we find out that Sarah Jane is a mixed girl (her father is white) and with her being so light in complexion, she has been passing as a white girl in school. She goes to a school where all of her peers are white, and to fit in she assimilates to the idea that she is white, and hides that she has a black mother. Born in a time of
