What causes tree leaves to change colors in Autumn? Hypothesis: During the summer, the cells in the trees convert energy from the sun into food for the tree to grow. This takes place in the chloroplasts of the cells, which contain chlorophyll that gives the leaves their green color. There are also other pigments other than green, ranging from yellow to orange. However during summer, these other colors are masked by the massive amounts of green pigment.

1. Gather three glass jars, baggies, rubber bands, small bowls, spoons, and leaves from from three different trees. You will also need rubbing alcohol, hot water, tape, and a coffee filter.

2. Tear the leaves from each tree into small pieces and put them in the jars according to their tree type. Pour enough rubbing alcohol into each jar to cover the leaves.

3. Mash and stir the leaves until the alcohol is tinted green; this is important, so mash them well.
