Com 211: Argumentation and Advocacy Spring 2008 Dr. Craig Allen Smith Office: Winston Hall 229 E-mail: [email protected] Cell Phone: (919) 280-3583 Course Description: This course surveys the use of argumentation in a number of settings, contexts and relationships. The course deals with the understanding of argumentation and rhetorical theory as well as the practice and analysis of such in professional and every day life. To facilitate student learning, class discussions, research, written assignments, exams and oral presentations will make up the required work within the course. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course students will be able to Research and present arguments on a chosen subject matter advocating a fact, value and/or policy with appropriate evidence and support. Critique arguments found in media and everyday usage by analyzing their evidence and reasoning. Identify and understand terminology and theory associated with basic argumentation. Take greater responsibility for learning and interactive reasoning. Course Policies 1. Course prerequisites or restrictive statements: There is no formal prerequisite for this course. 2. Electronic Devices: Mobile phones, MP-3 players, PDAs and laptops are not allowed in class except for class related activities. Violation of this rule may result in confiscation of the device and/or dismissal from the class at the discretion of the instructor. 3. Attendance policies: The course will offer original lecture material, readings, links to web sites and other resources and guidance. Evaluation is entirely about your work. There is no credit for simply showing up. If you do not come to class you will miss substantive material; if you do not read the text you will miss substantive material – and if you have missed much substantive material it is hard to imagine how you can score well in this course. If you miss an examination because of an “excused absence” (as defined by Attendance Regulation REG02.20.3 ) it will be your responsibility to schedule the makeup exam. Any other class work that may be missed, whether excused or unexcused, is difficult to recreate. 4. Instructor's policies on incomplete grades and late assignments This portion of the syllabus relates the NC State University Attendance Regulation REG02.20.3 to the specifics of COM 211. A. There is no formal penalty for a missed class and, consequently, there is no permissible number of absences. It is your class work, not your simple presence that matters. Regular class work including participation, whether excused or unexcused, is difficult to recreate.
