Newton’s Laws Lab I. Introduction: A. The lab contained two parts first to explore how the change in an object’s mass affected the acceleration at which it moved when a constant force was applied to it. The second portion of the lab explored how acceleration would chance when the force was chanced and keeping the total mass constant. B. For the first experiment the independent variable was the object’s mass while the dependent variable was acceleration and the force was kept constant. It was predicted that the mass and acceleration would change inversely of each other. In the second experiment the applied force was the independent variable and acceleration was the dependent variable. In this case it was predicted that the acceleration would change in a direct relation to the force applied. C. 1.)Equipment used: a ramp, bubble level, computer, a cart on wheels, String with hooks on both ends, Weights (masses) including weight hanger and weight holder, Lab pro equipment; lab pro/ logger pro software, smart pulley with photogate and mounting rod, universal table clamp. 2.) a. The independent variable in part 1 was the mass. In part 2 it was the acceleration of the cart b. the dependent variable in part 1 was applied force. In part 2 it was the acceleration. c.
