HIV AND AIDS 2 Introduction HIV/AIDS is one of the epidemiological diseases in Africa. The virus has caused the death of many people in the continent, reducing the population of senior citizens in Africa. The number of infected people of this disease is estimated to be 50 million for individuals above 50 years. The virus cannot be cured and as it continues to evolve with time. When is an individual is a victim of the virus, he or she has to live with the virus through their lifetime. The disease is transmitted through sex, birth, and blood transfusion. Medical research has come up with a drug that suppresses the virus. The medicine is in the form of antiretroviral drugs. Most governments in Africa are administering these drugs for free to patients in order to reduce the number of deaths from the virus and opportunistic diseases which in turn increase the population of senior citizens in Africa. The World Health Organization has estimated that the population of people above 50 years will increase to 200 million by 2030 through their practices. However, the older adults who live with the virus face some health problems of the opportunistic diseases. The aim of this proposal is to look into the effect of HIV and AIDS on senior citizens in the African continent. Besides, the essay will focus on the long-term impact, implications, and challenges of HIV and AIDS on elderly people. .
