9/21/17 2. siberian prison camp -discovered cruelty for its own sake -guards who loved to dominate -human nature was more complex than he thought/would have known had he not gone there -the value of privacy, having something of your own. In 4 years he was never alone -he knew the common people, others only knew what they had seen in French propaganda, etc. -the elite thought they knew what was best for them -he realized his faith (Christianity) as he didn’t think everything could be explained by science. He experienced religion for himself, said he would rather stand with Christ than with the truth. Faith is the search for faith, it is not a certainty, it is a struggle -released after 4 years and serves in the army, marries an older woman with a child, on their honeymoon he has an epileptic seizure 3.his epilepsy -descriptions of seizures are similar to those of capital punishment 4.he was an addicted gambler -was always in debt -wanted to marry an intelligent woman but then they’d have to be a radical revolutionist -he made a deal with this guy who wanted to be able to publish his books without paying him -hired a stenographer to write his book -she didn’t smoke, which led doestovsky to think she believed in god, which she did -this novel was called the gambler and was about the psych behind gambling -hires her for his next novel too, which was about an older man who falls in love with a younger woman and he asks for her help finishing the plot – they end up getting married -he goes abroad to escape debtors prison, had to pawn everything they owned and beg publisher for an advance -was working on a book called the idiot, but couldn’t make it psychologically convincing, so he threw it all out and began with the same character but examined a different question -had no idea where the plot was going but he needed to write in order to survive -this was an analogy to life, it is uncertain, you don’t know where it is going, and that is the way it should be. Things shouldn’t be planned in advance Russian names -respectfully addressing someone = first name plus patronymic name -father’s name is Ivan = ivanovich or ivanova for boy or girl -karenin v Karenina -lots of nicknames in Russian, lots of diminutives -ie katarina = katya, ivan = vanya Brothers Karamazov
-whole thing is a preface, but nothing follows it, there are only hints throughout the book as to what happens in the future -Part 1 -karamazovs were a dysfunctional family -cruel, horrible, old man who is the father.
