SOCI111 ASSIGNMENT 1: FIELD ANALYSIS2Field Analysis of a Day in My Life from a Sociological PerspectiveSociety is made up of many different types of people from all different backgrounds, however, weall play a key role in society. Every morning I wake up at the same time, I go to work, and I come hometo complete homework while my husband cleans the house and cooks dinner. Being in the military, mydays are very monotonous. What I do throughout the day is dictated by those who are higher on the rankstructure than I am and I dictate the tasks of those who are lower than me. With that being said, we allhave the same thing in mind -to please, impress, and not irritate those who outrank us.Field Log5:30: Wake up, shower, eat breakfast, interact with husband.Personal hygiene, common courtesy5:55: Leave for physical training at gym on post. Very little traffic.Following rules of the road6:15: Arrive at gym. Everyone is rushed as they hurry to get to their respective formation on time.Emergent norm6:30am: Interact with coworkers. Conduct pregnancy physical training. We are all pregnant and don’twant to be awake this early. We participate, but with very little enthusiasm.Ethnocentrism8:00am: Complete physical training, shower, eat another breakfast (I’m pregnant).9:30am: Attend production control meeting, listen to those in higher positions go off on thelower positions for not making the progress they believe they should have made the day prior. Lowerranking soldiers say what they can to make themselves look good to those with a higher status.Emotional labor, impression management, inequality9:50am: Begin my work -which can be described as customer service. People come in, we give them whatthey ask for. Those who outrank us receive our utmost respect.Emotional labor, social control
SOCI111 ASSIGNMENT 1: FIELD ANALYSIS311:30am: I stay for standby as my coworkers head for lunch, my husband brings me lunch to eat as Iwork. I receive no phone calls, a few people come in for various helicopter parts -some get irritated as wedon’t have the part they need and must wait until 1pm for myself or another in my shop to call around toother units on the airfield.Folkways, inequality1pm: My coworkers are back; I brief them on what needs to be completed then leave for my lunch. Ispend my lunch time in my vehicle sleeping -away from all the people and hustle and bustle of work.Social deviance, material culture2:30pm: Return to my office and receive a brief on what’s been done and still needs to be done. Thetension is high -as not everyone wants to pull their own weight in the shop, so I start giving orders.
