Perry 1 Tia Perry Ms. Springhorn American Studies May 27th, 2013 May 27th, 2013 Dear Mr. Perry, Enclosed with this letter is a mixed CD for you to listen to and enjoy while you are fighting over in Iraq. The first song listed is entitled “Hero of War” by a band called RIse Against. The song shows what a soldier truly deals with while he is fighting over in war, and even though he returns a hero, he also has regrets of what he has done. Soldiers, when they are fighting and in the midst of the war, do things that they don’t mean to, relating to, “They took off his clothes, they pissed in his hands, I told them to stop, but then I joined in,” relating, maybe not to your experiences but to what you’ve seen your enemies put your comrades through. And, in war, you are put in difficult positions, such as mentioned in the song, “she walked through bullets and haze, I asked her to stop, I begged her to stay, but she pressed on, so I lifted my gun, and I fired away.” Your experience in a previous war, where you hadn’t wanted to kill anyone, but had to when it was killed or be killed, when the man’s gun didn’t work on you, and you unloaded your gun on him (pg 152). With hearts, and when you return from the way, many will be proud of you and what you’ve done. “A hero of war, is that what they see, just medals and scars, so damn proud of me.” They don’t know what you’ve gone through or what you did to earn those scars or medals, they just know that you received them. “A hero of
