The muscle disease I will be discussing today is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This disorder is also called dystrophinopathy or pseudohypertrophic myopathy. This disorder is a raremuscular dystrophy that occurs mainly in boys. DMD is classified as an X-linked recessive disorder. Patients with this disorder lack dystrophin protein in muscle cells. Without this protein the muscles become fragile. The symptoms of this disorder are fatigue, learning difficulties (i.e. ADHD), intellectual disabilities (.i.e. autistic spectrum disorder), muscle weakness starting in thelegs and pelvis leading to the arms, neck and other areas, motor skill issues, and frequent falls. The disease is diagnosed through genetic testing, electromyography, muscle biopsy and SerumCPK testing. There is no cure for DMD but rather treatments that can help improve their quality of life. Most patient will be put on steroid medication and cardiac medication. Doctors encourage patients to participate in physical activity. Children with DMD will have Cyclosporine
