Ruben Morales 12/14/17 5 th Period Final Exam Study Guide U.S. History Fall 2017 Part 1 Directions: Using your notes, past study guides and warm up activities, answer the following questions to prepare for your final exam. The study guide is due on the day of your final exam. 1. What is the goal of mercantilism ? Under this system, governments wanted to control and regulate trade in the new lands. Their end goal was to have favorable balance of trade where they exported more than they imported 2. What role did colonies play in the system of mercantilism? Colonies were an important part of mercantilism because they allowed Mother countries to have that favorable balance. 3. What role did European nations play in the system of mercantilism? European nations competed over each other for land. 4. What were navigation acts and why did mother countries need to enact them? They were acts that restricted colonial trade and the mother countries enact them to force trade between England and the colonies . 5. Describe Triangular / Trans-Atlantic Trade . Trans-Atlantic trade is different from Trans-Atlantic slave trade it simply means the integration of African, Asian and Latin American economies to European economy through the medium of transnational corporations in the 19th and 20th century. In many parts of the world this trade has considerably weakened many historic long distance trade like the famous Silk road trade in Asia trade or Sahara trade routes in Africa. 6. What challenges did indentured servants create for plantation owners and how did slavery solve these challenges? Plantation owners had to give indentured servants land, seeds and money after they finished their years of servitude but slaves did everything for free. 7. What motivated Jamestown Colonist to settle in this colony? Religion persecution, search of economic opportunities and a better life. 8. Why was Jamestown initially a struggling colony, and who was responsible for fixing the issues they faced? Many colonists weren't used to working, so they refused to do labor, and the river water was contaminated and many got sick, and eventually hunger struck as well. Captain John Smith fixed the issues. 9. Which crop led to the success of the Jamestown Colony and who was responsible for introducing this crop to the area? Tobacco led to success and John Rolfe introduced it. 10. Describe the relationship between Jamestown settlers and natives when they FIRST arrived. Now, describe the relationship between the two as time progressed. At first they were cool but later on they had conflicts over land. 11. What is the significance of the Mayflower Compact ? The Mayflower Compact was the first governing document in what is now the United States. 12. What was the main cause of the Salem witch trails ?
