I believe one of the author's main purposes of writing this book was to show people that octopuses are wonderful, intelligent and kind creatures. She really wanted to show that octopuses aren't so different from humans and that they should not be thought of as monsters. They all have unique personalities and a desire to explore and learn just as humans do. The first octopus she met was Athena who was considered a particularly feisty octopus, who tended to be very active and easily excited. The next octopus she would meet was Octavia who was very shy at first because she was not warmed up to humans. After a little bit of time, she became more curious and was very gentle with the Author in their interactions. The third octopus was Kali who was very young when she came to the aquarium. She was very outgoing and friendly and all of the people loved her. The fourth octopus she met was Karma who was very joyful and active, although not as exuberant as Kali was. The author did a fantastic job of showing how octopuses
