How could speech recognition systems be used in innovative and useful ways? Speech recognition is gaining popularity in the corporate world among nontypists, people with disabilities, and business travelers and is most frequently used for dictation, screen navigation, translation, and Web browsing. It is becoming the easiest method for word processing, application, navigation, and conversational putting because speech is the most natural means of human communication (O’Brien & Marakas, 2013, p 103). The way speech recognition works is it digitizes, analyzes, and classifies your speech to known sound patterns in a database and plays it through your application software. With anything, training is crucial when choosing to implement this because you need to basically train the computer to recognize your voice and its unique sound patterns for a high degree of accuracy. Everyone’s speech broadcasting is unique and to expect the computer to be able to attain a 100% accuracy is near impossible however it can get pretty close. There are continuous speech recognition software products like Dragon Naturally Speaking and ViaVoice by IBM that have allowed corporate workers to perform data entry without using their hands to key in data or instructions to provide faster and more accurate input.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
