These motivations included the desire to gain power, the desire to expand territory, and to gain prestige by winning colonies. These are just a few of the motivators for English Colonization. (Norton, 2015) Sir Humphrey Gilbert travelled across the Atlantic and claimed Newfoundland for the BritishCrown. His half brother, Sir Walter Raleigh, decided to follow him and began to explore Virginia. Attempts to settle in Virginia were made between 1585 and 1590.
