1 Clinical Health and Administrative Information Systems Healthcare information systems (HIS) are comprised of computer hardware and software that form a group of systems that store and process data used to support patient care and administrative functions (Hebda & Czar, 2009). HIS are usually classified as either administrative or clinical information systems, depending on the purpose and function. Decision support system programs pull information from both clinical and administrative information systems to enhance provider decision making and improve organizational efficiency (Hebda & Czar, 2009). Clinical Health Information Systems Clinical information systems are sizeable electronic database management systems that clinicians use in the planning and delivery of patient care . Clinical activities supported by the clinical information systems are computerized order entry, provider documentation, retrieval of results, and clinical decision support tools (Hebda & Czar, 2009).
