Michael Jordan v. Chinese Qiaodan (Jordan) Sport Co.
Facts:
Michael Jordan the well-known NBA superstar filed a lawsuit against the Qiaodan Sports
Company which is a Chinese company that allegedly use the Chinese name of Michael Jordan
(Qiaodan) to sell their products. This is a trademark case against the rights of Michal Jordan,
although he was not a company or a business entity it still violated his own human rights.
According to (Jourdan, 2016), the Qiaodan Company not only used the name of Michael they
also use his iconic number 23. Because they used his Chinese name and number without his
permission he filed a case against the company. At first, the court ruled in favor of the Qiaodan
Company in the year 2005 at the Beijing Municipal High People’s Court. But Michael Jordan
and his legal team did not give up, they take their case to the China’s top court, (Jourdan, 2016).
The Supreme People’s Court decision favor to Michael Jordan wherein the court recognized his
own right to protect his name and he wants to proclaim that the Qiaodan products have no
connection on him, (Jourdan, 2016).
