Running Head: Reflective EssayIntroductionThere are many different aspects to early literacy that include but are not limited to instructional deliver, literacy levels, language development and the learning environment. To be an effective educator, becoming a master in all areas is most important. In the education system today, there are more and more students who have special needs, speak another language or need to be challenged among other things. Having the knowledge to support all literacy learners is necessary to being an effective teacher.Getting to Know Your LearnerThe first most important aspect of developing a literate learning environment is getting toknow your literacy learners. All aspects of the environment impact a students’ literacy development. “Many students learn to read, but many choose not to read as they leave school to live their lives” (Afflerbach, 2012, p.174). There are many ways an educator can get to know their learner, and use their knowledge to create a rich learning environment. Sending home a questionnaire is a great way to start; this is one way to gain information on the family, their culture, their life at home, needs, interests any many other non-cognitive aspects that may impactliteracy. Using different assessments can supply more detailed information on the literacy learnersuch as comprehension, phonics, fluency, their motivation or interests and other areas of importance in literacy. Another great way to get to know the literacy learner can be through natural observations. During this time, the educator observes a student in their natural environment which can be through a home visit, at school during free play or at a time where they are not aware that they are being watched. When combining these ideas, one can create an environment that reaches out to all students. This strategy helps to create a rich literacy environment by using a lot of vocabulary words written on bright paper, posted all over the roomthat can be changed with each theme. Activities can be based on the reading or theme from a story that was read the day before, this allows students to recall and use their background knowledge. Modeling by saying words slower, underlining words and segmenting words are some ways to foster development and doing this is possible from knowing the literacy learners and their different needs.Selecting TextSelecting text can be a great strategy for creating not just a literacy rich environment, but motivation and student engagement.
