Haley Stiegler Stiegler 1 Mrs. Wenz AP Literature and Composition 18 September 2017 The Perfect Predicament “It would be criminal to mar this exquisite occasion with the grotesque story of his origin” (Fitzgerald ). In “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,”, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1922, Benjamin is born an eighty year old man that grows younger as time quickly passes. In the film released in 2008, written by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord and directed by David Fincher, the artists captured the essence of Benjamin’s unique adventure of a life in which he grows backwards to die an infant in an old souls arm’s in the house he grew up. Nevertheless, in the film, Fincher creates a life filled with supportive friends and loving family for Benjamin, whereas Fitzgerald writes his life to be lonely and isolated. The relationships throughout Benjamin's life affects his incredible optimism and perspective for his future in the film. In the short story, his relationships with his father and absent mother contribute to the cloudy of plight that hovers over him even during his brightest days. In the film, Benjamin’s mother dies at birth, leaving him to be raised by his father. However, his father felt resentful towards his child and new he could not raise a child knowing what had happened to his wife. He then leaves him on the porch of a pure, kind woman named Queenie who had been running a retirement home at the time. She took him in, despite his elderly looks and horrific health, and loved him unconditionally. Queenie was one of the most
