Non-Voting Size of the Problem: - In some cases half of the eligible citizens in the U.S. do not vote. - National elections see a greater turnout than state and local elections - More people vote in general elections than primary or special Who do you think Votes?- After going through the slides put down a few groups of people that do vote below in the box. People ages 65-74, white people, black people, rich people Why people do not vote? List a few in the box below. Too busy, inconvenient polling place, forgot to vote, not interested in voting Cannot Voters Some voters who are thought of as non-voters are actually cannot voters. Why? They are illegal aliens They are traveling out of the country or state where they could vote. Some are in mental health care facilities Some are in jail or prison Religious beliefs Discrimination still takes place Actual Non Voters Why? Chose not to go to the polls They believe their vote doesn’t make a difference
